Skating Past the Kilsdonkse Molen

Saturday, 3-May-2008 - Dinther - Today our fun on wheels route led us past the Kilsdonkse Molen (windmill) here's information about its history and restoration http://www.kilsdonksemolen.nl. Ron was at the meeting point to say that he wouldn't be skating today. He was saving himself for the Stevensbeek tour tomorrow. As it turned out, Ron went bicycling with his wife Chris. We met them on the way to Dinther.

Vat Oe Fiets

Sunday, 1-May-2008 - Veghel - Chris and I rode 50 km today on the fortieth edition of Vat Oe Fiets, Veghel's annual bicycle tour for young and old. This year the route took us through Schijndel, Gemonde, St. Michielsgestel, and Den Dungen. Along the way, we saw familiar faces of volunteers at checkpoints. We met Bep and Henriƫtte, Fun on Wheels skaters. Bep was bicycling with her husband Gerard, and Henriƫtte was at the Molenheide Garden Center checkpoint in Schijndel. Bernadine, mother of Chris's friend Hein, was working at the Garden Center. We also met our neighbors Tineke and Gert when we got back in Veghel. They bicycled together in a group of 21 from their church parish. In Den Dungen, the checkpoint was in the Jacobuskerk were beautiful organ music could be heard. I went farther inside to enjoy it.

Skating Fun from Mill to Grave

Sunday, 27-April-2008 - Mill - It was the warmest skating day of the year! We carpooled to Fitland in Mill. We had another great turnout: 18 Fun on Wheels skaters. Very nice smooth route--only a couple of rough stretches, including a historic stone-paved street in the town center of Grave where we had a break for coffee and tea at de Foeks restaurant. Great fun for 30 km. When I got back home, I had time for some yard work.

Saturday Fun on Wheels

Saturday, 19-April-2008 - Veghel - There were eight skaters today: Tonnie, Frans, Marion, Mieke, Bart, Maria, Adriaan, and me. It was cloudy and starting to sprinkle when we decided to roll. We checked out some new asphalt along the river AA which runs through Veghel--very nice. We posed again at the bridge in the direction of Keldonk. Mieke cut it short when the sky didn't clear.

Tour de Frans

Sunday, 13-April-2008 - Uden - Tour de Frans, because Frans is the one who selected the route. I rode by bike to the meeting place in Uden--about 8 km. What a turnout--23 Fun-on-Wheels skaters and one moped rider! Again, the weather was uncertain, but it stayed dry until we got back to the market place in Uden--then the rain fell out of the sky. Sure, I got wet on the way back home, but a nice warm shower took care of that. This was a great skating day--good for 25 km!

Retour Retour

06-April-2008, Sunday - Veghel - Retour Retour is the name of the inline skating fund-raising tour organized by 13-year-old Sacha for her father, Lex van Zutphen who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as "Lou Gehrig's disease." Sacha would like to help pay for a family vacation trip this summer to the United States--while Lex is still able. Fun on Wheels skaters responded whole-heartedly to Sacha's call for help.

First Saturday Skate Outdoors

Saturday, 05-April-2008 - Veghel - It was to be our first skate oudoors today, but the weather was so theatening that almost everyone stayed home. I was watching the weather radar really close, and there was a chance that it wouldn't be raining around 1630, the time we meet on Saturday's. I rode my bike to the Sligro meeting point. Bep stopped by to see if anyone showed up. I was the only skater. I had to get the feel of skating outdoors before tomorrow.
