Queen's Day Holiday

Friday, 30-April-2010 - Veghel - After raising the flag and reading the paper (see related post), watched the Koninginnedag (Queen's Day) celebration on TV. It was rainy in the morning, but turned out to be a nice day. Did some work in the back yard. Watched a koolmees (Parus major), relative of the chickaddee, go in and out of its bird house.

Royal Recognition to Bep Roovers

Friday, 30-April-2010 - Veghel - Opened the Brabants Dagblad daily newspaper today to read that Fun-on-Wheels Bep Roovers received the Dutch royal medal of recognition: Member of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Her long-standing volunteer service and leadership in the community was sited, including 32 years volunteer at the Sint Lambertus parish, 23 years treasurer of the Sint Birgitta Guild, 12 years church lay person hospital visitation team member, and six years Bernhoven hospital volunteer. Well done, Bep!

Tuesday Skating in Boekel

Tuesday, 27-April-2010 - Boekel - It was a wonderful sunny day, and it was starting to cool off. I was glad to be in Boekel again. I missed skating last week. I stayed home with a cold and filled-up lungs. Willem and Maureen had picked me up at Ron's house. Once again there were about 35 skaters. At 1900, Gerard called everone together and explained the route for this evening. It would be about 21 km. It was great.

Oirschots Pieterke

Sunday, 25-April-2010 - Oirschot - The tour today is called "Rondje Oirschot" (Around Oirschot). Pieter Smits was our skating guide to this beautiful area. At the coffee break, Pieter treated us to an Oirschots Pieterke, a local specialty.

Saturday, 24-April-2010 - Veghel - It was warm and sunny. I first drove to De Wit in Schijndel to get some spare brake pads. The asparagus season was in full swing (photo). Our route took us by the Kilsdonksemolen. Five skaters were good for 20 km.

Volcanic Ash?

Thursday, 15-April-2010 - Veghel - On my way home from work, I was listening to radio reports that nearby Schiphol airport closed at 1900 due to volcanic ash from the erupting Eyjafjallajökull Volcano in Iceland. I wondered the ash was actually visible from the ground.

Tour de Frans

Sunday, 11-April-2010 - Uden - It was my first Fun-on-Wheels Sunday this year (last Sunday I stayed home for Easter). We had a great turnout: 22 skaters and one moped rider. I got a real treat on the ride back home. The Sint Barbara en Sint Lucia guild, originally founded in 1492, had "awakened" and was returning from the official ceremony in the Sint Petrus church.

Fun on Wheels First Skate

Saturday, 3-April-2010 - Veghel - It was cool, overcast, and windy; but the road surface was dry. I was late for our 1630 departure. Halfway to the Sligro meeting point, I remembered that I didn't have my fall protectors with me. I biked back home to get them, and I phoned ahead say that I was on my way. Frans said they'd wait for me. Bep and Mieke were skating to stay warm when I arrived. We kept it short to be able to get back quick if it started raining. We skated in and around the industrial park.
