Grand Canyon Retour Retour Thank you

Thursday 29-May-2008 - Grand Canyon - Got a very nice and heart-warming thank you card in the mail today for the Fun on Wheels skaters from Sasha and her family. They made it to the Grand Canyon! That was a special last wish of her father, Lex. Sasha made that possible by organizing a skating tour last month which raised € 8000.

Workum Skate Weekend

Sunday, 25-May-2008 - Workum - Just got back from a three-day Fun on Wheels skating weekend in Workum, one of the eleven cities of the province of Friesland. What a terrific time! Lots of pictures to follow. Siebe Tjalma was our skating guide, and Martin and Elly were our hosts at the Bed & Breakfast het Smidsvuur http://www.pensionhetsmidsvuur.nl/. Thirty-three skaters--good for 120 km over three days--a few fanatics skated an extra 40 km on Saturday (day 2).

Go Skate Schijndel

Sunday, 18-May-2008 - Schijndel - No carpool today. Our meeting point was closeby in Heeswijk, about 8 km away. I decided to leave my bike at home and skate there. We had 15 Fun on Wheels skaters and super weather! The Go Skate Schijndel route was 27 km long, and took us some pretty countryside. After we got back to the meeting point, I turned down a ride home . I skated back home as well. I felt my left knee and ankle hurting on the way back home. I guess that can be expected after five hours on skates.

Bridges and Viaducts in Eindhoven

Sunday, 4-May-2008 - Eindhoven - It's Remembrance Day today in Holland with flags flying at half-mast. We met near the Ikea in Eindhoven. The 38-km route normally includes six bridges and six viaducts. Today one of the bridges was replaced with a small ferry boat. Great sunny weather--great skating!

Skating Past the Kilsdonkse Molen

Saturday, 3-May-2008 - Dinther - Today our fun on wheels route led us past the Kilsdonkse Molen (windmill) here's information about its history and restoration http://www.kilsdonksemolen.nl. Ron was at the meeting point to say that he wouldn't be skating today. He was saving himself for the Stevensbeek tour tomorrow. As it turned out, Ron went bicycling with his wife Chris. We met them on the way to Dinther.

Vat Oe Fiets

Sunday, 1-May-2008 - Veghel - Chris and I rode 50 km today on the fortieth edition of Vat Oe Fiets, Veghel's annual bicycle tour for young and old. This year the route took us through Schijndel, Gemonde, St. Michielsgestel, and Den Dungen. Along the way, we saw familiar faces of volunteers at checkpoints. We met Bep and Henriƫtte, Fun on Wheels skaters. Bep was bicycling with her husband Gerard, and Henriƫtte was at the Molenheide Garden Center checkpoint in Schijndel. Bernadine, mother of Chris's friend Hein, was working at the Garden Center. We also met our neighbors Tineke and Gert when we got back in Veghel. They bicycled together in a group of 21 from their church parish. In Den Dungen, the checkpoint was in the Jacobuskerk were beautiful organ music could be heard. I went farther inside to enjoy it.
